Zorn out – Shanahan watch starts

The Jim Zorn era ended this morning at 4:30 a.m. after the team returned to Ashburn after a 23-20 loss to the Chargers in San Diego.

ESPN had it first and locally WUSA, WRC, ESPN 980AM, WTOP-FM and 106.7FM “The Fan” all opened their 5 a.m. morning newscasts with the departure of Zorn.

WUSA sports director Brett Haber was on hand to report on of Zorn’s departure. Haber reported that Zorn was escorted to his car at around 4 a.m. (Others also reported that he was accompanied to his car by security.)

The Redskins voice Larry Michael told Andy Pollin and Kevin Sheehan on ESPN 980AM on the Monday Morning QB Show:”Zorn was walked to his car by a couple of his staff assistants and not security. He left the building after talking to GM Bruce Allen who gave him the news of his dismissal. Zorn then went to his office and he left the Redskins Park on his own there was no security.”

There will be a 12:30 p.m. press conference at Redskins Park with GM Bruce Allen that will be carried live by CSN, ESPN 980AM and likely other outlets – but at this point this is being treated like breaking news.

Meanwhile the announcement of Mike Shanahan as the new Redskins head coach will likely happen this week and could come as soon as Tuesday.

Multiple sources even have reported that the former Broncos head coach already contacted other position coaches to be part of his staff.

Less than 24 hours after the end of the season and not headed to the playoffs the Redskins are still the number one sports story in Washington and are likely to hold that spot for quite a while.
