Quarterback battle still unsettled

Quarterbacks wear yellow jerseys in spring games to indicate not to hit them. Quarterbacks at Maryland might need to start wearing additional colors just to indicate who will play.

That is because, as of right now, there are no other indicators as to who will start at quarterback next fall for the Terrapins.

On Saturday, at theTerps? Red-White spring game, none of the three favorites ? Jordan Steffy, Josh Portis, and Chris Turner ? gave any hints to the answer.

“I think we gotta get better at quarterback,” Maryland coach Ralph Friedgen said.

Then when asked what needs to happen for one to earn the starting role, he responded, “Score points, if you don?t score points you can?t play quarterback.”

Steffy, who has played with the Terps since 2004 and entered as the favorite, went 7-of-12 passing for 80 yards, three interceptions, and a lone touchdown, which came against the backup defense.

“I am not concerned at all,” Steffy said. “I am excited for this summer and to continue to get out and work and get better.”

Portis, who will enter his first season with the Terps after transferring from Florida, completed 5-of-12 passes for 104 yards and threw for one touchdown on a 68-yard play where the cornerback fell.

“I felt fine,” Portis said. “I told coach, ?Put me in a red game jersey so I could run around a little bit as well,? but I guess I was limited.”

Turner started against the backups, showing on the depth chart that he might be behind the other two. In the game, he completed 11-of-15 passes for 115 yards and one interception.

As for the game itself, the White team defeated the Red squad, 27-10. This meant the Terps? starting offense (with Steffy and Portis) scored 10 points on the starting defense, while the backup offense (led by Turner) scored 27 on the backup defense.

Friedgen said no one answered Saturday who would be Maryland?s starting quarterback. He doesn?t expect that to happen until the question won?t get answered until just before the season opener Sept. 1 against Villanova.

“I?m going to continue to work those three guys and give them equal reps all summer and see who emerges at the end of summer,” Friedgen said. “Then we gotta make a decision.”
