For Drexel, don’t trust the resume

Drexel came up just short in the CAA tournament final to VCU on Monday night. And now, the CAA regular-season champion Dragons (27-6) could come up short in making the NCAA tournament.

Despite winning 19 consecutive games, Drexel’s resume might not be strong enough to hear its name called on Selection Sunday.

The Dragons have an RPI of 66, post only four top-100 wins and have a strength of schedule outside the top 200.

A couple big conference bubble teams have more impressive resumes despite having losing league records. Northwestern (18-12, 8-10) has a 48 RPI and the 13th strongest schedule in the country. Seton Hall (20-11, 8-10) has an RPI of 60 and four wins over top-50 squads.

But while the Dragons were winning 19-straight games, the Wildcats and Pirates had nine losses each in that span.

Giving either of the big conference teams an at-large bid over the CAA regular-season champion would be rewarding mediocrity.
