A spirited morning full-pad practice
Studs
DE Brian Orakpo. In the one-on-ones, he beat Chris Samuels twice, first getting underneath his pads and the next time going around him. He continues to look very sharp at this position and now more people are wondering why not just make him a full-time end. One thing I’d wonder about in that situation is what will having to play the run against 330-pound tackles do to his pass rush? I would imagine it would wear him out, perhaps leaving him a little more ineffective as a rusher.
DT/DE Lorenzo Alexander. Beat Jeremy Bridges twice in one-on-ones, spinning around him on the second time, after shoving him back on the first. Did the same to him in the 11-on-11 portion.
WR Keith Eloi. Badly burned Fred Smoot in one-on-ones, simply running past him. It almost looked like Smoot was anticipating a different route. Regarldess, Eloi went past. Then, in the 11-on-11 portion, he beat Doug Dutch on a stutter-step and go.
DE/LB Chris Wilson. Starting to look more comfortable at linebacker and continues to flash at rush end. Got into Stephon Heyer’s pads and moved him back on one rush (though Heyer did stop him twice in one-on-ones). Did a nice job on contain on one bootleg to the right, forcing Jason Campbell to roll a bit wider.
CB Kevin Barnes. One of his better practices, it appeared. Showed little hesitation on what he read, doing a good job using, and trusting, his eyes. He stepped in front of D.J. Hackett to intercept a Colt Brennan pass, having read Hackett’s route well. Was good in coverage during the 11-on-11’s. Still has a ways to go, but definitely showed improvement.
WR Marques Hagans. Made a nice leaping catch along the right sideline over Michael Grant (who had a good day otherwise) in full-team work. Needs to make a few plays after a subpar opening game if he wants any chance of making the final roster.
FS LaRon Landry. Has done a nice job on his blitzes all camp; he seems to be free most of the times he comes. The more the Redskins trust the other safeties, the more it enables Landry to blitz.
Duds
RG Chad Rinehart. Knocked back by Kedric Golston in one-on-ones. Allowed Jeremy Jarmon to get under him going to his outside shoulder. He did ride out Alexander on one pass protection.
LG Derrick Dockery. OK, he’s going against Albert Haynesworth in a one-on-one setting. Guys like that are tough to handle one-on-one. We get that. But Haynesworth whipped him twice. The first time, Joe Bugel yelled at Dockery to not use his head as a ”battering ram.” The next time, Haynesworth got into Dockery’s pads and just moved him back.
SLB Brian Orkapo. Was beaten off the line by Fred Davis, partly due to his footwork. Orakpo seemed indecisive, allowing Davis to get by him. Davis was several yards behind him. The only thing that saved Orakpo was that Jason Campbell threw too low. Orakpo, without looking back, raised his arms up and the ball hit him. Covering tight ends could be an issue this season.
DT Antonio Dixon. Had back spasms so couldn’t work, but that’s a bad sign for him. His lack of conditioning hurt him during the preseason opener and now he missed a practice because of the back. He needs to be in better shape.
LT Jeremy Bridges. Gets beat way too much at this position. Orakpo got him a few times in 11-on-11.
QBs Jason Campbell/Colt Brennan. Both threw picks early during 11-on-11 before settling down. Neither looked consistently sharp until the team later used a lot of quicker throws.
DE Jeremy Jarmon. Actually did some nice things, but jumped offsides twice. Worked more at tackle today because of Dixon’s absence.
