UMBC slugger named player of the year

Maryland-Baltimore County first baseman Melanie Denischuk (Poway, Calif.) was named the America East Conference player of the year and Maryland-Baltimore County athlete of the year.

The junior transfer from Auburn was among five Retrievers softball players honored by the conference. Denischuk, junior Reilly Ward (Olney, Md.) and senior Jessica Griffith (Glen Burnie High) were first-team selections. Freshman Courtney O?Hara (Institute of Notre Dame) and sophomore Dana Shepherd (Oakland Mills High) were second-team honorees. O?Hara was also an all-rookie team pick.

During the athletic program?s awards banquet, track and field standout Mike Zyvolski (Long Reach High) was named Maryland-Baltimore County male athlete of the year.

Other athletes recognized at the ceremony included men?s soccer player Marcus Gross (Barnstaple, England), lacrosse standout Brendan Mundorf (Mount St. Joseph), Kelly Fiorani (Liberty High) of the lacrosse and soccer programs, and tennis star Ale Pedergnana (Queens, N.Y.), who were chosen as outstanding senior athletes.

Sprinter Adam Grossman (Pikesville High) and pitcher Lauren Nicholson (Audubon, N.J.) were honored with the Matt Skalsky Outstanding Scholar Athlete awards.

Tigers? Navarro, three others named to all-caa teams

Towson sophomore Nina Navarro (Diamond Bar, Calif.) earned a spot on the Colonial Athletic Association softball first team, while three teammates were named to the second team, according to a Towson athletics release.

Sophomore pitcher Jessica Fisher (Littleton, Col.), freshman infielder Emily Gould (Lake Forest Park, Wash.), and catcher Jen Hastings (Delmar, Del.) were second team honorees.

McDaniel softball duo slugged All-Region

Emily Trainor (North Carroll High) and Whitney Williams (Hereford High) were chosen as members of the 2006 Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Region Mid-Atlantic Region team, according to a release from the McDaniel athletics department.

Trainor, a second-team selection, batted .416 with seven home runs and 30 RBI, while Williams, a third-team choice, led the team with a .440 average while smacking eight doubles and four home runs.

Veteran coach retires

CCBC Essex baseball coach George Henderson announced his retirement after 22 years and 443 wins with the program. Including five seasons with Baltimore City Community College, Henderson leaves with a career record of 641-346.
