Beck to start vs. Colts

It’s not a surprise, but now it’s official: John Beck gets his turn to start.

After Rex Grossman starred in the preseason opener, coach Mike Shanahan said Beck will start vs. Indianapolis on Friday. Because Shanahan has said all along that it’s an open competition, it makes sense that Beck would start. He was unable to play in the preseason opener vs. Pittsburgh because of a sore groin.

“He’s close to 100 percent,” Shanahan said. “He looks like he’s full speed or pretty close.”

Beck did not yet know after practice that he would start. But he knew he would at least play. And for that he’s anxious.

“It was tough to go through an injury because I had to miss practice and then not to play in the game was also frustrating,” he said. “It’s good to get back in the flow and get excited about a game.”

He watched Grossman complete 19 of 26 passes for 207 yards and a touchdown, a strong debut. But Beck said he doesn’t feel pressure.

“I’m just excited to play because I missed an opportunity,” he said.

And Beck knows what constitutes a successful outing.

“Putting the ball in the end zone,” he said. “That’s what the offense is designed to do. Manage the offense, but find a way to put points on the board. But if you’re in there and there’s a bad play or something breaks down, don’t let a bad play become a terrible one. Move on and manage the game.”
