Thoughts on Williams

Some thoughts on new Redskins OT Trent Williams:

1. This one made sense, even though I would have taken Russell Okung. But Mike Shanahan is more of a risk-taker when it comes to drafting. Based on what people had said about Shanahan and his drafts, it was clear that someone like Williams would be his guy. His athleticism equals lots of potential.

2. In talking to one GM today, he said Williams is “as talented as any lineman to have come out in a while. He’ll step in and be their best lineman right away. He’s competitive and he’s tough.” That’s the good part. Read on for the other side.

3. However, the GM also called Williams “lazy.” He worried about how Williams would handle the money and fame that now will come his way. Others have wondered the same thing. This GM also would have picked Okung.

4. It was hard to believe the talk about Eric Berry, if only because the need at left tackle was so great. It was mostly viewed as the Redskins  trying to coax the Chiefs into moving up one spot.

5. Williams’ nickname is Silverback, as anyone who watched Roger Goodell call his name out should know. Williams said it’s been his nickname for a while and he joked with “Mr. Goodell” about calling him that when he said his name. He obliged.

6. Williams seemed to have some problems with technique at left tackle, but we’ll cut him some slack. He only started at the position for one season (though he was the primary backup at left tackle the first three years while playing right tackle). Williams has quick feet, but he would sometimes seem to lose focus and allow pressure.

7. Williams is versatile — he even played center for one game. The GM said he could play any spot along the line. Though he might be a risk — Pro Football Weekly said he has bust potential in their draft guide — he at least fills a gaping hole and he was not a reach. He was too talented to not go in the top 10.

8. His athleticism has drawn comparisons to another Shanahan draft pick, Ryan Clady. But the GM said there’s a big difference. He said Clady was more of a true tackle, while he said Williams is more of a true guard. But his size and athleticism puts him on the edge.
