Freeman gives Hoyas triple threat

It’s silly to think that Austin Freeman can duplicate his ridiculous 25-point second half effort Saturday against UConn. Those “in the zone” moments don’t come along every day.

But Freeman’s steady ascent in the past three weeks — he’s averaging 21.2 points per game since Christmas — is the real thing to focus on here. The shot has always been there for Freeman, even when he stumbled to 31% from 3-point range as a sophomore. This season he’s at 44% from downtown. But more than the shooting stroke, Freeman clearly is more comfortable in coach John Thompson III‘s offense.

His emergence gives the Hoyas a legitimate third option to go with Chris Wight and Greg Monroe, who also have elevated their game. Monroe averages nearly a double-double every night. Wright’s points-per-game and shooting averages are up from a year ago.

Freeman, often thought of as the sidekick to Monroe and Wright, leads Georgetown in points, minutes and shooting percentage. If the Hoyas can sustain this triple-threat attack, they might be the team to beat in the Big East.
