The Redskins promoted Terrence Austin from the practice squad – this time for real – and cut veteran wideout Joey Galloway, the team announced Saturday.
Austin, a rookie seventh-round pick from UCLA, might be needed as a returner if Brandon Banks can’t play. Banks is questionable with a knee injury and was walking with a limp Friday; Austin excelled as a returner in college.
Galloway was a curious signee to begin with, having been cut by Tampa Bay, New England and Pittsburgh in the past 15 months. At age 38, he was considered done by most. But he opened the season as Washington’s No. 2 receiver and did little, eventually dropping to the No. 3 spot. Galloway had 12 catches for 173 yards this season and now has 701 receptions for his career.
A week ago, sources close to Austin said he had been promoted to the active roster just before the team left for Tennessee. Austin even told a reporter from the Washington Post that he had been signed. But the Redskins said Austin accompanied them on the trip as a “reward” for how he had been practicing.
