As the 2026 NFL Draft in Pittsburgh wraps on Saturday, attention will turn to next year’s event in Washington, D.C., as the large-scale sporting event returns to the nation’s capital for the first time in 85 years.
The National Football League announced that the 92nd annual NFL Draft will take place on the National Mall with an anticipated attendance of over 1 million fans. The last time the NFL Draft took place in Washington was on Dec. 10, 1940, when the 1941 draft was staged at the Willard Hotel.

“The NFL Draft has become a marquee event, uniting fans across the country and around the world,” said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell in a statement. “We are excited to bring the 2027 Draft to Washington, D.C., a city rich in history and national pride. With the support of President Trump, the Commanders, Events DC, and Mayor [Muriel] Bowser we’re looking forward to delivering an unforgettable experience as we celebrate the next generation of NFL stars.”
What will the 2027 NFL look like?
Goodell presented mock-ups of the three-day event to Bowser, President Donald Trump, and Washington Commanders owner Josh Harris at the White House last May, with the stage being framed by the U.S. Capitol and the Washington Monument.
“It’s such an honor to have — I think it will be great for everybody. Great for our country. It’s going to be something very special. There’s no scene like it. There’s no site like it,” said Trump, noting that the draft is a “celebration of one of the country’s most cherished cultural institutions.”
Exact dates for the 2027 draft and ticket sales have not been announced, though the event typically falls on the last weekend of April.

The city will also host a slate of Draft activities, including a variety of community events, such as the Draft Concert Series and the NFL Draft Experience, the ultimate free fan festival that invites fans to participate in immersive exhibits, challenge their skills in interactive games, take photos with the Vince Lombardi Trophy, enjoy the youth-focused Play 60 Zone, shop exclusive NFL merchandise, and score autographs from current players and Legends.
Expected economic benefits for the nation’s capital
The event is anticipated to generate a significant economic boom for local businesses, mirroring previous host cities, with a rough estimate of $250 million being cited by Lawrence Hamm, vice president of business development for Events D.C.
“It will bring hundreds of thousands of visitors, millions of viewers around the world, and generate jobs, tax revenue, and meaningful economic impact across the city,” noted Harris. “The Draft is a powerful reminder of how sports bring people together – and we’re honored to play a role in that.”
In 2025, the NFL Draft in Green Bay, Wisconsin, generated more than $100 million in statewide economic activity, with more than 600,000 fans in attendance. Detroit established a record attendance of 750,000 in 2024.
“This is a historic occasion for Washington, D.C., and we are absolutely honored to host the 2027 NFL Draft,” Events DC president and CEO Angie M. Gates said in the statement. “The NFL Draft will provide football fans with an unforgettable experience, while showcasing all that makes Washington, D.C., a world-class destination and the Sports Capital. We look forward to working with our partners and community to deliver a world-class event that reflects the dynamic spirit of our city.”
To help businesses access that opportunity, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce recently convened an information session in partnership with Events DC and the Washington Commanders.
Additionally, the NFL Draft Source is an initiative that connects small and underrepresented businesses with contracts tied to major events.
Through the 11-month program, participating businesses will gain exposure, build strategic relationships, and compete for procurement opportunities across food and beverage, transportation, and event operations. The initiative aims to offer a pathway to sustained growth and national visibility.
“The goal is to keep as many dollars in the DMV as possible,” said Dr. Chanelle Reynolds of the Washington Commanders. “When local businesses succeed, our communities succeed, and that’s a win for all of us.”

Further, Goodell has noted that the 2027 NFL Draft is a step toward Washington being considered to host a Super Bowl, as the new stadium, approved on April 28 of last year, would “dramatically” increase the district’s odds.

“I really do think this community could be a great host for a Super Bowl,” Goodell said. “The [new] stadium is always the missing piece.”
The Council of the District of Columbia approved a $3.7 billion deal to bring the Washington Commanders back to the city from Landover, Maryland, with construction on the stadium expected to conclude in time for the 2030 NFL season.
