New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced a lottery for $50 World Cup tickets to 1,000 New Yorkers on X Thursday.
“What can $50 get you in New York City?” the mayor asked in the video.

“Twenty-five cups of street cart coffee. Ten months of hard-hitting journalism,” Mamdani wrote. “Infinite rides on the Staten Island Ferry. And for 1,000 lucky New Yorkers? A ticket to the World Cup.”
Mamdani joked that a front page of the New York Post announcing his mayoral win in November is “still a classic.”

The New York Post copy Mamdani held up had, “On your Marx, get set, Zo!” on the front of its page. It quickly caught the attention of New Yorkers, many of whom supported Mamdani, for its eye-grabbing flair. Its popularity led to soaring prices for the cover — the New York Post sells a metal print on its website for $100.
“All for New Yorkers,” Mamdani’s caption reads. “We fought hard to make the people’s game available to the people — and won.”
Commenters criticized the announcement, highlighting the city’s taxes and crime.

Some called out his statement that the lottery is “All for New Yorkers,” despite the drawing only going out to 1,000 in a city of millions.
The World Cup begins June 11 and will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
