Two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Kyle Busch died from pneumonia that progressed into sepsis, according to a new statement from his family.

Busch died at the age of 41 on Thursday, one day after he passed out in a Chevrolet simulator. He previously planned to compete in the Coca-Cola 600 race at Charlotte Motor Speedway on Sunday.

“The medical evaluation provided to the Busch Family concluded that severe pneumonia progressed into sepsis, resulting in rapid and overwhelming associated complications,” the family said on Saturday, asking for “continued understanding and privacy” after his death.

Charlotte Motor Speedway was the venue where Busch won the Coca-Cola 600 in 2018.

The first sign of Busch’s illness manifested on May 10 when he raced at Watkins Glen International in New York. At the time, he asked a doctor for a “shot.” He was thought to have had a sinus cold, which developed into pneumonia.

Sepsis occurs when the body has an extreme reaction to an infection, causing the immune system to go into overdrive. The result is widespread inflammation that can damage the body’s own tissues and organs. The life-threatening medical emergency requires immediate medical treatment.

The sudden illness likely stemmed from Busch’s racing at the New York course, where he sustained intense G-forces and elevation changes.

Busch leaves behind his wife, Samantha, and two young children, Brexton and Lennix. He is also survived by his parents.

The NASCAR driver was an open supporter of President Donald Trump, who watched him race at the Daytona 500 in Florida last year.

On Friday, Trump issued a statement in honor of Busch after his death.

“The LEGENDARY NASCAR Driver Kyle Busch tragically and unexpectedly passed away yesterday,” the president posted on Truth Social. “He was a true talent who loved NASCAR and its fans. Kyle was a WINNER! He was a two time Cup Champion, and holds the All Time Record for WINS in NASCAR’s Top Three series, and even won another just last weekend.”

“Kyle’s wife, Samantha, and their two beautiful children are in our thoughts and prayers,” he wrote. “Samantha was at the White House in October, for IVF. She truly loved Kyle! Rest in Peace Kyle Busch. You will always be a LEGEND!”

Busch won a record-setting 234 races across NASCAR’s top three series. His last win was at the Ecosave 200 at Dover Motor Speedway in Delaware on May 15.

For the Coca-Cola 600 this weekend, all 39 drivers will race with a black No. 8 decal on their race cars. Busch’s signature car was the No. 8 Chevrolet Camaro.
