Hoffman drops the bomb at Va. Senior Women’s Amateur

Former Virginia basketball player captures Senior Am for second time

Springfield’s Mimi Hoffman first made her mark in Virginia athletics as a basketball player in Charlottesville. More than three decades later, Hoffman is doing it on the golf course as one of the state’s best amateurs.

Friday in the 59th Virginia Senior Women’s Amateur at the Old Course at the Homestead, Hoffman drained a 22-foot birdie putt on the 17th hole to beat former champion Shelley Savage of Alexandria, 2 and 1, and capture the title for the second time. Hoffman, a member at Belle Haven, won her first Senior Am in 2006.

“I have goose bumps. I am so happy – so happy,” Hoffman told Andrew Blair of the VSGA. “It’s been a long time since I’ve won one of these. This is special for me because Shelley is such a good player. I really wanted it this year.”

With conceded putts that are customary in match play, Hoffman played the final round in 3-under-par. Hoffman, who was 2 up though eight holes, missed just two greens, giving Savage little chance to come from behind.

When Savage, the 2005 champion and a record four-time winner of the Virginia Senior Women’s Stroke Play, cut the deficit in half with a 25-foot birdie putt at No. 10, the long-hitting Hoffman answered with a conceded 15-foot eagle putt on No. 12, a par 5, which she reached in two shots.
