Jim Williams: NBA show offers an inside look at Nuggets

The Denver Nuggets will be featured on NBA TV’s third season of the critically acclaimed show “The Association.” The first episode can be seen Sunday at 5 p.m., with multiple replays being shown throughout the week. Providing behind-the-scenes access to the players and coaches, the show will follow around a Nuggets team that is battling atop the Western Conference a season after trading away All-Star Carmelo Anthony.

The Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtics have been spotlighted in the previous seasons of “The Association.”

Executive producer Dion Cocoros discussed what to expect this season.

How did you come about picking the Nuggets?

Cocoros » “Denver was a good choice because of their back story. This is not one of the league’s super teams, yet year in and year out they make the playoffs and always are extremely competitive. The city loves the team, and they have one of the most loyal fan bases in all of basketball. So after doing the Lakers and the Celtics the first two years, we really felt like the Nuggets made a great subject for year three of ‘The Association.’?”

What can we expect to see in episode one?

Cocoros » “It is a great chance to see how head coach George Karl puts together a team on short notice. I mean since everything was so condensed this offseason, it presented some very unique challenges. Starting with having enough players to even have a practice with or to scrimmage. How Karl set the roster and the interaction he has with the players as a teacher comes out very quickly in the first episode.”

What do you hope the fans take away from “The Association”?

Cocoros » “Well, that we have something for everyone in this series. For the reality TV fan, we have the day-to-day grind of what it is like to be a player in the NBA with all the humor and drama that comes with being together for six months. If you are a basketball junkie, then you will see what happens during a game from every possible angle.”
