Grossman not planning to sit

ASHBURN – Redskins quarterback Rex Grossman thought the question kind of odd. He’s a quarterback in the NFL, one who has started in the past. So why wouldn’t he want to ascend to that job now?

Makes sense to him, even if it might not be what fans of his new team want, based on his career passer rating of 69.5.

“Yeah, that’s my goal,” he said. “I want to start in this league at some point and get back there and play. I definitely think I can. I have a lot of confidence in myself. Hopefully this is a stepping stone to the second half of my career.”

The Redskins signed Grossman on Wednesday, fueling speculation about what it meant. In reality, the Redskins probably don’t peg him as a 16-game starter. He’s here because he knows the offense run by offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan after playing for him last year in Houston.

“Nobody presented any scenario to me,” Grossman said. “They said they were glad to have me as part of the team, and that’s how I’m taking it. I’m here to help the Redskins win a Super Bowl whatever way I can. I just want to be thrown into the mix.”

Meanwhile, Redskins linebacker London Fletcher said the shift to a 3-4 defense is not that big a deal to him. Washington has used that look in the past, and at times the weakside linebacker is aligned inside anyway.

The biggest difference, one he liked, was the Redskins’ prudent approach to free agency.

“I guess it was a breath of fresh air, not thinking like, ‘Oh, here we go again … trying to buy a championship,'” he said. “So by them not doing that, being very deliberate in their approach to free agency, I was definitely excited about the way they approached it.”
