With so many new college basketball coaches in the area, it’s time to take a look at how they’ve started. Here’s an attempt at rating their work in Week 1. 4. Mike Lonergan (George Washington) » So far this year’s version of the Colonials (1-1) looks a lot like last year’s. Tony Taylor (20 ppg) is the only consistent scoring threat. Lasan Kromah (3-for-17 from the field) is struggling coming off a Lisfranc (foot) sprain. Big key: The return of Dwayne Smith (concussion) will bring some much needed toughness.

3. Paul Hewitt (George Mason)?»
The Patriots (2-1) were looking forward to a potential game in Blacksburg on Tuesday against Virginia Tech. But Florida International spoiled the plan. Ryan Pearson (20.7 ppg, 11.3 rpg) has been outstanding. Big key: The return of guard Andre Cornelius can’t come soon enough. The Patriots are averaging 19 turnovers a game.
2. Ed DeChellis (Navy) » The former Penn State coach suggested in the preseason that the Midshipmen would play deliberately. Instead, Navy (2-0) was averaging 83 ppg after its first two games. The Mids will get a better barometer Wednesday night at Siena. Big key: Can Navy get productive minutes out of 6-foot-10 freshman Jared Smoot?
1. Mark Turgeon (Maryland) » He’s enjoying a honeymoon with Terrapins fans, who are thrilled he has so little in common with their new football coach. But it will be interesting to see how things go for Maryland (1-0) with three tough games in four days in the Puerto Rico Tip-Off. Big key: Can Turgeon persuade Terrell Stoglin to pass and play defense?
