Churchill’s Jared Pinsky will try to win his second straight Montgomery County tennis championship, but he’ll have to wait a day to do it. With a storm looming Thursday, the final round of the four-day tournament was postponed and moved to today at Blake High.
Pinsky’s opponent will be Chris Goodwin. The Rockville sophomore came into the tournament seeded No. 3, advancing thanks, in part, to defaults by his semifinal opponent, Jordan Keen (Sherwood), and No. 2 seed Dan Stahl (Whitman).
The only edge Goodwin has is lineage. His brother, Michael Goodwin, now a freshman at Emory, beat Pinsky in the 2004 county final before the Churchill junior avenged the defeat last spring on his way to a second straight state public school championship.
Pinsky (10-0) has cruised to the final. His 6-1, 6-1 victory Wednesday over No. 4 Adam Newman (Walter Johnson) was the first match in the tournament in which he has lost a game.
Going into the final round, Churchill (20) led Wootton (15) and Blair (15). With a victory, coach Ben Woods’ team will clinch its 11th county championship in 13 years.
Churchill has a chance to claim all four singles spots. Andrew Marcus, last year’s runner up at No. 2 singles, is in the finals again. He got past Blair’s Jordan Fein, 6-3, 6-4, in the semifinals Wednesday. Marcus, the top seed at No. 2 singles, will face second-seeded Tim Klanke (Whitman), who advanced Wednesday with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) win over Neil Soni (Northwest).
