Redshirt freshman Nathan Renfro didn’t know until Friday afternoon that he would be the Maryland punter. After edging Brad Craddock for the job, he made a stellar debut on Saturday, averaging 53 yards on four punts in the Terps’ 7-6 victory over William & Mary.
Renfro’s best punt came with 3:37 left – a 57-yarder which hit at the 5-yard-line and died. It was downed by the Terps at the 2, leaving a daunting task for the William & Mary offense.

“He paid off in a big way,” Maryland coach Randy Edsall said. “Now he’s gotta know that’s expected every week.”
Edsall sounded surprised at the work of Renfro, who has been inconsistent in practice.
“Maybe he’s a gamer, and not a practice guy,” Edsall said.
Craddock’s kicking debut wasn’t as successful. He missed a 25-yard field goal wide, but recovered to make what proved to be the game-winning extra point. He was a replacement for senior Nick Ferrara, who is experiencing continuing hip pain after surgery eight months ago. His status is uncertain.
