Local products Justis, Wells also in pro ball

In 2005, it became apparent that Mike Gotlieb?s roster featured pro talent.

A year later, the Tigers head coach can look back with pride, as three of his players from that team are in the minor leagues.

Aside from Orioles farmhand Jason Maxey, the Towson program has produced Dodger infielder Shane Justis and Detroit Tigers outfielder Casper Wells.

“In the off-season all three of us worked out at Towson, so we got to see each other and share our war stories and stuff like that,” Maxey said.

Wells, currently with Single-A Lakeland in the Florida State League, was a 14th-round choice as a junior. With the Detroit Tigers? Gulf Coast League team in 2005, Wells hit five home runs in 45 games.

Justis, a graduate of Bel Air High School, spent four seasons in the Towson middle infield, and left as the school?s career stolen base leader with 69. Justis is also second in program history with 158 runs scored. He spent last season with the Ogden Raptors in the Pioneer League, and is currently in extended spring training.

The 6-foot-2 Wells was a pitcher and outfielder for Towson, and earned Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Year honors in his final season at Schuerholz Park.

“I thought they were going to have him pitch a little,” Maxey said of his ex-teammate. “He runs well and he?s got a good arm, so right field is not a bad spot for him.”
