Success ? both within a team and individually ? is a two way street.
No. 1 Towson Catholic wouldn?t be undefeated without Donte Greene, Malcolm Delaney and its solid role-playing underclassmen. And those teammates may not be getting the same collegiate looks without the success of the team.
“I think Malcolm and Donte challenge guys in practice every day,” Towson Catholic coach Josh Pratt said. “That?s the idea of a program, you know. Younger guys are looking at Donte and Malcolm and those guys and they want to be at that level.”
The Owls won the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association title Friday night, defeating McDonogh, 71-49. The title was the team?s third and its first since the 2000-2001 season.
Towson Catholicearned the No. 1 seed in the Baltimore Catholic League tournament, and after the first round was snowed-out Sunday, the Owls will play St. Maria Goretti today at 3:30 p.m.
“Its one thing to go undefeated in the MIAA, and if you can do that in the Baltimore Catholic League tournament, that?s tremendous,” Pratt said.
Greene was recently named a McDonald?s All-American, and will take part in the game as a member of the East team March 28 in Louisville.
“It means a lot for the school to have a McDonald?s All-American,” Pratt said. “I just think it?s a tremendous honor for him and I think the players are really happy for him.”
Delaney, who last week was named the BCL player of the year, will be one of the headliners of the Charm City Challenge. The Baltimore team will battle a national team April 1 at the Towson Center.
The Baltimore roster includes a solid base from the MIAA and BCL. The guard position includes Delaney, Devin Brown (City) and Desmond Thomas (St. Frances). Forwards include Aric Brooks (St. Frances), Darrell Bryant (Randallstown), Braxton Dupree (Calvert Hall), Dino Gregory (Mount St. Joseph), Nikita Mescharakou (St. John?s Catholic Prep) and Joe Yermal (McDonogh). Montrose Christian?s Maryland-bound Shane Walker is the lone center listed on the roster. Former locals Lyndon Jones and Johnny Higgins, both attending prep school in Massachusetts, will also join the roster.
Among members of the U.S. roster, two are bound for local colleges. Forward Ricardo Brown is headed to Towson while Forward Isaac Reid will play for Loyola.
