Krystin Lawson, Maryland’s top high school sprinter this spring, has transferred from Riverdale Baptist to Wise High, following her father, Reggie Lawson, who has been hired as the school’s track coach.

Reggie Lawson will handle both the indoor and outdoor teams at Wise, the newest school in Prince George’s County. Wise will not have a senior class this year, but will compete in varsity sports.

“It’s a very exciting opportunity,” said Reggie Lawson. “There are a lot of outstanding athletes coming to the school. We’ve got a chance to be a factor quickly.”

Reggie Lawson coached Riverdale through a tumultuous indoor season. It was barred from competition against state public schools by the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Association.

Krystin Lawson will be a junior this fall. She ran a state-best 11.77 seconds in the 100 this year.

Davidson commits to Terps

St. Stephen’s and St. Agnes rising senior Ian Davidson has verbally committed to play football at Maryland, according to his former coach Gary Schnell.

Davidson, a 6-foot-3, 275-pound lineman, did not have a scholarship offer from a Division I school as of mid-May. But his stock rose after participating in a Nike Camp held at Rutgers University, according to Schnell, who is now head football coach at St. Albans.

Davidson played on both the offensive and defensive lines for the Saints, who finished 4-5 last season, and is also an excellent wrestler. He won the Interstate Athletic Conference championship at heavyweight, placed second in the St. Albans tournament and third at the Virginia Independent School state tournament.

Coaching scramble approaches closure

After a relatively quiet offseason that saw six boys basketball coaches in Northern Virginia resign from their position, two jobs remain open.

Oakton High is bringing five candidates in for a final round of interviews today and hopes to make a decision over the weekend, according to activities director Phil Levine. Former coach Chris Dux stepped down last month. Hylton High has not begun its interview process and is still accepting resumes.

The Bulldogs lost Kevin Brown last month when he accepted the coaching position at Mountain View High, a second-year high school in Stafford County.
