Redskins beat reporter is top D.C. sportswriter John Keim of The Washington Examiner was named D.C. sportswriter of the year by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association on Monday.
“I’m very flattered and honored,” Keim said. “This is a great market and really brings out the best in you as a reporter.”
It’s the second consecutive year that an Examiner writer has won this award. Columnist Rick Snider was the recipient for 2010.
“John is the best Redskins reporter on the toughest beat in Washington,” Snider said. “His analysis has attracted a national following, and his work ethic is unmatched. I’m very lucky to work alongside such a talented and dedicated journalist.”
Keim has been a Washington Redskins beat reporter since 1994. He is the driving force of The Examiner’s Redskins Confidential blog and produces a weekly Redskins newsletter.
“John is the best Redskins reporter in town and one of the best pro football writers in the country,” Examiner Editor Stephen G. Smith said. “John and our other beat reporters have developed large followings both in print and online.”
Along with covering the Redskins, Keim has been an essential contributor on the Cheers & Jeers page. He also has written four books — three on the Redskins and one on the Cleveland Browns.
The 53rd annual NSSA awards banquet will be held in Salisbury, N.C., on June 11. Along with Keim, 102 other state sportscasters and sportswriters of the year will be honored.
Bob Costas of NBC Sports and the MLB Network and sportswriter John Feinstein of the Washington Post have been elected to the NSSA Hall of Fame.
Dan Shulman of ESPN was named the sportscaster of the year, and Joe Posnanski of Sports Illustrated was named the sportswriter of the year.
Former WRC-TV sports anchor Lindsay Czarniak, who now is employed by ESPN, won D.C. sportscaster of the year.
