Even though Ravens starting running back Jamal Lewis will sit out the remainder of the preseason, there is a perceived battle for the position. That perception has only been increased thanks to the emergence of Musa Smith in the preseason and the presence of offseason signing Mike Anderson, a two-time 1,000-yard rusher.
“There?s no such difficulty as having three good backs,” head coach Brian Billick said. “You couldn?t be in a better position.”

So, how will he keep each runner happy, admitting each is unlikely to carry the ball 300 times?
“Respectfully, you all are more obsessed with that than I am,” Billick told the media Monday. “We?ve got three good backs. Like I said, we?re going to run the ball about 500 times. I?m sure they care, and I?m receptive to that.”
Anderson claims to like the situation.
“That always good when you have depth at a position,” he said.
Billick baffled by officials? calls: Billick was asked at practice Monday if he sensed any lingering resentment from officials in Thursday?s preseason game against the Eagles in lieu of last year?s infamous Detroit loss. In last year?s game, a 35-17 Lions win, the Ravens were flagged 21 times and had two players ejected. The game led many to say the Ravens were undisciplined.
Billick treaded lightly when speaking of penalties called in the preseason.
“That?s hard to say,” he said. “Without trying to be critical, there were four calls [Thursday] that need to be fully explained to me better than had been. But, yeah, you?re always concerned about it, and you address it as best you can. But, no, I don?t think our crews are singling any team out.”
Punter Araguz?s absence explained: When struggling punter Leo Araguz missed practice Saturday and Monday, some observers wondered if his brief time in Baltimore was over.
“He had a child,” Billick said. “He should be back tomorrow.”
Araguz is battling rookie Sam Koch for the punting spot on the team, but neither has looked impressive in game action. Koch, taken in the sixth round of the NFL Draft in April, is thought to have the edge if the team decides to not test the free agent market.
“We?ve got some good competition there,” Billick said. “So, I?m feeling good about the guys we have in camp and their ability to do the job.”
