Local lacrosse stars home for ACC Tourney

Who said you can?t go home again?

Ninety-six area athletes on the rosters of the men?s and women?s lacrosse teams in the Atlantic Coast Conference have been able to come home to play for the conference championship.

The Atlantic Coast Conference is holding its lacrosse tournaments at M&T Bank Stadium for the second year in a row. Stephanie Jones from Arnold is back in town with the Virginia Tech women?s lacrosse team.

“Playing near home is exciting; my whole family is coming,” said Jones, a Broadneck High School graduate. This is Jones? last year with Virginia Tech (8-8). The senior attacker is third in career scoring for Virginia Tech with 101 goals.

“Most everybody on the team is from Maryland or Northern Virginia, so we are all happy to play close to home,” Jones said. “It makes a difference when our families are out there.”

Jones has been in the tournament before, but for North Carolina freshman Bart Wagner, the ACC tournament is a first-time experience. Playing in M&T Bank Stadium, however, is not.

“I played in the high school game at the ACC tournament last year,” Wagner said. The St. Paul?s School graduate is leading UNC (4-9) in goals and assists with 14 each. “My early success is a confidence booster,” Wagner said.

“I?m really glad the tournament is here,” Wagner said. “There is nothing better than being back home.”
