D.C. United tidbits

First things first, let’s project a travel roster for Chivas — they’ve entered a debacle with the flight today, which got cancelled. The team is being split over an 8pm and a 10pm flight tonight, but everybody has to be there for the early one. Yuck. Anyway, I’m sure to get one or two wrong, but in piecing together who I saw in travel gear and what I was told, here goes:

Goalkeepers (2): Crayton, Wicks

Defenders (5): Jakovic, Namoff, Burch, Janicki, John

Midfielders (7): Fred, Jacobson, Gomez, Olsen, McTavish, Simms, Wallace

Forwards (4): Moreno, Pontius, Quaranta, Emilio

I’m working on a piece about D.C. United’s goalkeeper rotation. Some elements to consider: What does United ultimately want when it comes to the playoffs? A rookie, an up-and-comer, or a occasionally shaky veteran? Josh Wicks said he’s as fit now as he’s been in the past few seasons, and that every keeper’s goal is to separate themselves from the pack. Does it hurt a goalkeeper more if he’s not in the net every game? The situation with Louis Crayton is that United has an option on his contract that it can exercise this summer, or not. Currently, they haven’t.

At the other end of the roster, my understanding is that John DiRaimondo and Anthony Peters have now maxed out the number of teams — two, Richmond and Harrisburg — that they can be loaned to in USL-2. The same rule will apply to New York forward Matthew Mbuta, who played for Richmond last weekend and will be with Crystal Palace this weekend.
