The Flowers softball team earned its first victory in school history with a 5-4 win over defending Prince George’s County champion Bowie on Tuesday.
“I know they can beat this kind of team. They are just very intimidated by the girls that have been playing together for such a long time,” said Jaguars coach Molly Bender, who has coached the team since the school opened in 2000.
In the teams’ first meeting of the season Mar. 21, the Bulldogs triumphed easily, 11-0. On Tuesday, Flowers loaded the bases loaded with the scored tied, 4-4, in the fifth inning and then Jaguars junior catcher Brittani Stewart walked, forcing in the winning run.
Stewart also led the Jaguars (6-2, 6-2 Prince George’s 4A) at the plate, going2-for-3, and senior pitcher Kristen Schooler finished with six strikeouts.
“When she was up in the count, she was able to finish it,” said Bender of Schooler, a four-year starter. “It’s about time she worked it all out.”
