From Crüe to Cure
Mötley Crüe bassist Nikki Sixx was on Capitol Hill on Thursday to mark National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month. Sixx, once considered one of the wildest rock stars around, is a recovering drug addict. Sixx met with Rep. Patrick Kennedy, D-R.I., who has battled addiction of his own, and chatted up various staffers and fans about legislative remedies for addicts.
“It’s amazing how many people in the room know who Nikki Sixx is, what Nikki Sixx has done musically,” Sixx told Yeas & Nays. “They were going ‘I love the Dr. Feelgood album’ or ‘I saw you on tour!’ or ‘I love your interviews that you did with so and so.’ And I’m like, ‘Wow. They know.’ ”
Sixx said he has never been very political — just opinionated — and Thursday’s visit marked his first in a non-touring capacity. “To actually be here and see these people standing at the podium and seeing the passion coming off the podium,” Sixx said. “These people are real.”
With respect to politicians relating to addiction, he said: “It’s one thing when you’re a rock star and you say that you’re an addict. They all say, ‘Well, of course you are!’ But when you get people in government saying that, it’s really blowing the top off the secrets.”
