Fred Thompson drew a handful of pols for his first Washington fundraiser on Monday night, but one power player was noticeably absent: Spencer Abraham, the former senator and energy secretary who was rumored to have a major role in Thompson’s fledgling presidential campaign. After news reports speculated that Abraham was going to be Thompson’s new campaign manager which led to Republican insiders and bloggers eviscerating him as a ‘hack’ and worse.

Abraham took his bat and ball and left town, so to speak.

According to a well-placed source, Abraham had taken his son to the Baseball Hall of Fame induction ceremonies for Cal Ripken Jr. and Tony Gwynn this weekend and hadn’t yet returned to Washington as of Monday night.

Yeas & Nays also hears that Abraham is not, and was never going to be, Thompson’s campaign manager, only an informal adviser and supporter.

Among those we did spot at the $1,000-per-head event at the J.W. Marriott:

House Republican Policy Committee Chair Thaddeus McCotter and Reps. Joe Bonner, Roger Wicker and Ted Poe.

For his part, Thompson emerged from the elevator holding hands with his wife and daughter, turned his back to the cameras and wasn’t heard from again.
