Colts’ keys to the game
1. Pressure Drew Brees » Quite the insight, right? Well, it’s true. The Colts are more aggressive than in the past, but getting to Brees will be more difficult with Dwight Freeney’s injury. Still, they must force New Orleans to keep in extra blockers, limiting Brees’ targets. If he has time, Brees will pump fake and look off the safeties for huge plays.
2. Use their speed » The Saints love to run screens and outside runs with Reggie Bush. However, the Colts’ defense is built to take away those plays, thanks to speed, excellent tackling and good angles to the ball from the safeties. The ends must do a good job taking away the outside.
Saints’ keys to the game
1. Slow Peyton Manning » New Orleans’ defense does not stop anyone unless it creates turnovers. To do this against Manning, they must excel at disguising coverages and apply enough pressure with their front four and force Manning to move. Manning has excelled against Gregg Williams’ defenses in the past. Why? He can’t be fooled.
2. Establish the run » If Pierre Thomas, or even Reggie Bush, has a big day on the ground the Saints will be difficult to stop. It’s possible as both have had excellent games rushing the ball, especially Thomas. The Saints have two excellent guards to run behind inside. They’re also creative with how they use other blockers.
Key matchups
Dwight Freeney • Colts • DE » His sprained right ankle is a major issue. He excels vs. the run and pass.
vs.
Jermon Bushrod • Saints • LT » Former backup has done a solid job, but Saints provide him lots of help.
Dallas Clark • Colts • TE » If the Saints use more cover two than anticipated, he’ll have a monster game.
vs.
Darren Sharper • Saints • S » He’s never intercepted Peyton Manning; if he’s overaggressive watching Clark, others will burn New Orleans.
Charlie Johnson • Colts • LT » The former sixth-round pick has done a nice job; he’s helped by Manning’s quick decisions.
vs.
Will Smith • Saints • DE » The Saints’ blitzes often leave him one on one. But if they don’t blitz, he must apply pressure.
State of the teams
COLTS » Indianapolis is trying for its second Super Bowl win in four seasons behind the ultimate CEO quarterback in Peyton Manning. Dwight Freeney’s right ankle could be a problem. But the Colts have dealt with defensive injuries all season.
SAINTS » New Orleans is playing in its first Super Bowl and is the sentimental favorite. But the Saints should not be considered an underdog, not with its offensive firepower and aggressive playcalling. But their defense could be an issue.
Examiner predicts
We love the Saints’ story, but it’s hard to go against a quarterback like Manning. He’s playing too well and is too smart.
