It was a fitting end to the boys tennis season on Saturday as Robinson sophomore Drew Courtney and Chantilly senior Thomas Nolan met for the fifth time this spring in the Group AAA state singles final at Huntington Park Tennis Center.
After nine losses in their first 11 meetings, Courtney has seized control of the rivalry with wins in the Concorde District and Northern Region finals. He added the state championship to his resume after a 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) victory over Nolan.
Courtney also teamed with senior Mike Smith to successfully defend their Group AAA state doubles title, a 6-4, 6-4 win over Maggie Walker’s Andrew Kim and Jeremy New. Robinson sophomore Lindsey Hardenbergh and senior Christine Tran also defended their state doubles title after beating Cox’s Shannon Rogers and Imee Bautista, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. Westfield freshman Yilian Zhang lost to Deep Run junior Kristen Nimitz in the girls singles final, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
