With training camp coming to an end, the Ravens are still uncertain as to when linebacker Terrell Suggs will return to the team.
Suggs sat out all of training camp as a protest for being designated the Ravens’ franchise player after he and the team failed to come to terms on a long-term deal. Suggs has yet to sign his $8.5 million tender, which allowed him to miss camp without being fined or punished.
“There’s a chance [Suggs could report],” Ravens coach John Harbaugh said. “It’s up to him. He’s making that determination now.”
Earlier this year, the Ravens and Suggs came to a compromise regarding his franchise status after the six-year veteran claimed he should be considered a defensive lineman instead of a linebacker. Franchise players receive the average salary of the top five paid players at their position and the top five defensive linemen average a higher salary than the top five linebackers.
REED OUT AGAIN
Ravens Pro Bowl safety Ed Reed missed practice Thursday just days after the seven-year veteran began working with the team.
Reed has sat out most of training camp with a shoulder injury, but Thursday’s absence was apparently unrelated.
“Ed had an issue right before practice that came up last night that he was in the training room for,” Harbaugh said. “I don’t have the details on that yet.”
Reed, 29, was the 24th overall pick in the 2002 NFL Draft. The four-time Pro Bowl selection has 418 tackles and 34 interceptions in 90 career games.
Reed said the injury appears to be the culmination of more than 20 years of playing football and hopes to be ready by the time the Ravens take on the Cincinnati Bengals in their regular season opener on Sept. 7.
“I’m going to have to take it day by day, see how it feels,” Reed said. “If something was to happen, I would much rather it happen in preseason. Preseason is preseason. But preseason is beneficial when it comes to game action.”
ROSTER MOVES
Cornerback continues to be a concern for the Ravens as Chris McAlister (right knee), Samari Rolle (left leg), Fabian Washington (neck spasms), Derrick Martin (head) and David Pittman were limited in practice Thursday.
To help alleviate that concern, the Ravens re-signed Anwar Phillips, whom was waived on Aug. 1 when they signed running back Alex Haynes.
