The Major League Soccer Players Union announced yesterday that it had ratified the new labor deal with Major League Soccer, with 84 percent of its membership voting for ratification. While the partnership and transparency that have emerged from the new deal are indeed signs that the union and MLS are turning the corner in their relationship with one another, it really shouldn’t come as a surprise that the final vote from the players wasn’t unanimous.
Think Kevin Hartman voted for the deal?
And just look at what has been said by players who were on the bargaining committee, such as Kasey Keller: “You’re never going to get everything that you want on both sides.”
That comment was echoed by Sounders general manager and co-owner Adrian Hanauner: “And that’s when a good agreement is reached. When both sides are happy about some parts and maybe feel like they didn’t get everything.”
The fact that there were dissenters is healthy, and means there’s room for improvement, which there always is.
