A rush to nothing

One minute it was this: Jim Fassel’s going to be hired! Then it was this: he’s bringing Jim Zorn and Rex Ryan with him! And then this: it will be announced Thursday! Along the way, a Web site popped up, devoted to bringing down Fassel and owner Dan Snyder. The hysteria mounted.

But now it’s down to this: more waiting. Possibly two weeks worth.

According to several sources, the Redskins will wait until after the Feb. 3 Super Bowl to interview one, and possibly two, other coaches to replace Joe Gibbs. New York Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo tops the next list.

Fassel remained a top candidate and, according to a source, thought he would be offered the job after what several called a strong interview. However, word of his potential hiring upset both players and fans alike, with one Web site created called firesnyderandfassel.com. But, considering the Redskins are the only team with a coaching vacancy, they now have the luxury of time.

“I’m all for it,” one NFC East executive jokingly said of a possible Fassel hiring.

Meanwhile, Spagnuolo would be targeted and, according to an NFL source, he would definitely be interested. Spagnuolo was rumored to be Atlanta’s top choice, but the Falcons abruptly hired Mike Smith on Wednesday. Word leaked that Spagnuolo didn’t want to become a head coach after only being a coordinator for one year. However, a source close to him called that “hilarious.”

“He’s well-prepared to be a head coach,” an NFL source said. “Atlanta’s job had holes in it. [The Redskins] are one of the storied franchises. It’s a job you would have to take.”

Redskins defensive boss, and player favorite, Gregg Williams remains a candidate as does Indianapolis defensive coordinator Ron Meeks. Tennessee defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz also has interviewed. Gibbs spoke with some of his former assistants Thursday, updating them on the situation and likely wait.

New England offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels is a possibility, too. But McDaniels has been adamant, and consistent, in telling people that, at 31, he’s not ready for such a position.

Meanwhile, an NFL source said Seattle likely will keep quarterbacks coach Jim Zorn on its staff. Zorn interviewed for the job of offensive coordinator with Washington. And Baltimore defensive coordinator Rex Ryan told The Examiner he’d be comfortable staying with the Ravens, who are reportedly working on an extension, and raise, for him. The Redskins were said to be interested in him for their defensive coordinator’s job.

Also, if Williams is rebuffed in Washington, he could fill Jacksonville’s vacant defensive coordinator position. But the Jaguars would first look in-house to fill the job with either Dave Campo or Mark Duffner.
