Major League Soccer announced its plans for what has become an annual tradition: the expansion draft, which will take place this year for the Montreal Impact, who will be coached next season by Jesse Marsch, who started his MLS career back in 1996 with D.C. United.
The rules of the expansion draft are pretty simple – or at least, we’ve gotten used to them: teams get to protect 11 players, Generation Adidas and Homegrown players are protected automatically, and Designated Players don’t have to be protected unless they have a no-trade clause in their contract. Lists have to be in by Nov. 21, the day after MLS Cup, and the expansion draft will take place via conference call on Nov. 23 at 2 p.m. The Impact get to pick 10 players total so eight teams won’t lose anyone.
Last year, D.C. United lost defender Jordan Graye to Portland, who later traded him to Houston for a draft pick. He was waived by the Dynamo during the summer.
