With a sizzling 9-under-par 63 Tuesday at Old South Country Club, Denny McCarthy has fired his way into contention in the 91st Maryland Open. McCarthy (73-63 – 136), a sophomore at Virginia and the youngest Maryland Open champion in history when he won in 2010, trails leader Charlie Winegardner (68-66 – 134) by two strokes, and Sean Bosdosh (69-66 – 135) by one, headed into Wednesday’s third round.
Playing with first-round leader and four-time Maryland Open champion Chip Sullivan (67-75 – 142), McCarthy had a routine start, playing his first nine holes in 1-under-par, but on his second nine (the front at Old South), McCarthy birdied the first seven holes and finished with an 8-under 28. The performance was a departure from Monday’s opening round when McCarthy, the ACC freshman of the year, shot 38 on the same nine holes.
Also in contention is veteran Jim Estes (68-69 – 137), a former PGA Tour player and current the pro at Olney Golf Park, and amateur Blair Kennedy (73-66 – 139) of the University of Maryland Golf Club.
Winegardner, a longtime member at Old South and spring graduate of Coastal Carolina, is playing mini-tour golf as a recently-turned professional. Bosdosh, a junior at Maryland, won the Maryland Amateur in 2010 and was the runner-up at the Amateur last month and in the Maryland Open last summer.
