Mount Hebron?s girls and boys lacrosse teams each won their respective Class 3A-2A state championship games Tuesday at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.
The Vikings girls team continued their state dominance as they routed Stephen Decatur, 16-0, for their 10th straight state title and 97th straight win. The win also marked the sixth shutout win of the season for the Howard County school, considered by many to be the best team in the country.
Mount Hebron (19-0), which now owns 14 state titles in the tournament?s 17-year history, last loss in the state playoffs in 1996 when Annapolis won in the Class 4A-3A title game.
On the boys? side, Mount Hebron (16-4) had a little more difficulty but similar results as it won its fourth title in school history with a 9-7 win over Urbana (13-5). The title is the first since 2002 for the Vikings, who end the season on a nine-game winning streak; they have appeared in the state finals on eight occasions. The school?s other state championships came in 1991 and 1999, respectively.
The loss for Urbana, which was making its first championship game appearance, ended its run at becoming the first Frederick County school to win a state title in boys lacrosse.
