CBS TV broke the story at 5:20pm that the Ravens and the Texans will not play this Monday due to the devastation caused by hurricane Ike that has battered Houston.

The NFL is holding a conference call with both teams this afternoon and all options are being reviewed. The goal is not take away a home game from the Texans and so the scenario the league is exploring a bye week option.

The Texans’ bye week (Oct. 26) is a possibility. The Texans and Bengals have the same bye week. The Ravens’ bye week is Nov. 9. The Texans host the Bengals on Nov. 9. The Texans could host the Bengals on Oct. 26 and the Ravens on Nov. 9.

That is the option that the NFL favors at this point but it would require the OK of the Bengals. The league is making the inquiries and thus it will likely be later tonight before things are clear.

According to Associated Press out of Houston…

The storm tore chunks off the stadium’s retractable roof and the damage can’t be fixed in time to host the game, said Shea Guinn, president and general manager of Reliant Park.

“There is no way this stadium will host a game on Monday night,” Guinn said Saturday. “There are parts of the roof that are completely gone.”

The retractable roof on the $352 million venue rolls open in nine sections. Guinn said five of the sections were missing and large pieces of debris had fallen into the stadium.

“It’s hard to tell what came from where,” Guinn said.

“It certainly appears that the stadium is not going to be able to be used on Monday night,” NFL spokesperson Greg Aiello said.
