Coming off a disappointing draw with F.C. Dallas, a still undefeated D.C. United makes its yearly sojourn to Denver to face the Rapids, who last week yielded their fifth goal in two games to Houston striker Brian Ching.
In last year’s visit, United forward Jaime Moreno was sent off midway through the second half after a deliberate foul and Colorado goalkeeper Joe Cannon made a number of key second-half saves to preserve the Rapids’ 1-0 win. Terry Cooke scored the game’s lone goal.
Both the Rapids and United had one player selected this week for the U.S. World Cup roster. D.C. midfielder Ben Olsen and Colorado defender Pablo Mastroeni will both join the national team training camp on May 10 in Cary, N.C.
Once Olsen departs, Clyde Simms should see more action in the midfield but he’ll be sidelined versus the Rapids after suffering a hamstring strain in training this week.
D.C. United owns a 12-7-5 all-time record against Colorado but the Rapids should win the race for a soccer-specific stadium. Colorado’s new home in Commerce City, Colo., is expected to open in April 2007.
