Chaffee chides ‘cocky’ candidate

What about small towns?

Just because Gov. Sarah Palin was a mayor of a small town doesn’t mean all small-town mayors are backing her candidacy.

Former Rhode Island Sen. (and former Republican) Lincoln Chafee — previously the mayor of Warwick, R.I. — made it clear on Tuesday what he thought of Sarah Palin.

“She’s a cocky wacko,” Chafee told Yeas & Nays, demonstrating why he parted ways with his party in 2007 (becoming an independent) … and why his party has since distanced itself from him.

Chafee, speaking at the New America Foundation, confessed that Palin’s nomination energized the base, but said it was the wrong base: “She’s energized the left!” Chafee cited the numerous calls to his office from Democratic voters the night after Palin’s speech (apparently talking about his current office at Brown University, where he is a visiting scholar). One woman on the other line said “she couldn’t sleep” and said she just had to donate money to the Obama campaign. Of course, Chafee could be on to something: According to David Plouffe, Obama’s campaign manager, the campaign received more new contributions on the day after Palin’s speech than on any other single day during the campaign.
