Lest anyone think that Colin Cowherd does not like D.C., nothing could be further from the truth.
Cowherd, the host of the nationally syndicated “The Herd with Colin Cowherd” on ESPN radio, had his weekday 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. time slot on ESPN 980 AM pre-empted on Mondays and Fridays a few weeks ago. The taker of the air time was “Inside the Red Zone” with the Redskins VP of Football Operations Vinny Cerato. The pre-emption reportedly did not sit well with Cowherd.
This week I caught up with Cowherd — who wanted to set the record straight, once and for all, about the Redskins, Washington and Vinny’s show.
“After the Redskins opening loss to the Giants I did not think that there was much hope for the team,” Cowherd said, talking about how the mini-feud started. “They simply looked clueless. So I said that the team was headed for a very long season.”
Cowherd then praised the Redskins — how he loves Jason Campbell’s maturation and the hard-nose running style of Clinton Portis — and their fans — “it might surprise people, but I get more e-mail from Washington than any other city in the country.
“Look, I am happy to say I was wrong about the Redskins and that, now, they look like a talented team,” Cowherd said about his remarks following Week 1 of the NFL season. “But come on, you have to admit even the most passionate fans did not see them beating Dallas and the Eagles on the road after the opener against the Giants.”
As for any problems with Cerato, Cowherd waved those off.
“I understand that the Redskins — win or lose — are the biggest thing in Washington and that their fans want to talk about the team. I wish Vinny well,” The Herd host said. “I know that the people of Washington will listen to me Tuesday-Thursday till we get them back after the Super Bowl. But I must say, my show does well in cities like Washington because people there are smart and they get it.”
Cowherd is presently working on a number of projects, including several TV shows and lots of writing. So his fans will not just hear him, they will likely see him soon too.
