Thunderstorm Knocks Out Funniest Fed

Dark Humor

Scott Muschett

of the Senate sergeant-at-arms office was the first comedian to perform at Wednesday night’s semifinals of the Funniest Fed competition. And the last.

Muschett had just about wrapped up his five-minute routine when, “Sopranos” style, everything went black. This time, however, it wasn’t for dramatic effect, but because the evening’s thunderstorm knocked out power to the block.

After waiting it out for about 20 minutes in the darkness, the capacity crowd at the Arlington Cinema ’N’ Drafthouse was released, the event rescheduled to next week (full disclosure: Yeas & Nays is a judge).

“I was worried that the government wouldn’t let me do this contest, but I didn’t think to check with God,” organizer Naomi Johnson told the crowd as she shined a flashlight on her face.

“Call FEMA,” an audience member cried out.

Ah, federal humor.
