The Mardi Gras celebrations in New Orleans have always had a dose of political satire, and this year was no different.
A Yeas & Nays reader from Louisiana was on the scene and described some of the action at Friday night’s Le Krewe D’Etat parade.

The route was littered with political floats, including “Left-Wing Chicken” (Sen. Hillary Clinton), “Colonel Bill” (President Bill Clinton), “Fudge Nutty Brownie” (New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin) and local pol William Jefferson (whose float had the words “cold cash” emblazoned on the back, in honor of the congressman’s penchant for stuffing cash in his freezer).
And, in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, which devastated much of New Orleans, one should not be surprised that the Army Corps of Engineers got a healthy serving of ridicule. The “Corps Café” float featured one sign that instructed patrons to “place orders 10 years in advance” (a dis at the agency responsible for the design and construction of flood protection).
There were real celebrities, too: Hulk Hogan was the grand marshall of Sunday night’s Bacchus parade, and Kevin Costner assumed similar honors for Saturday’s Endymion parade.
