Open invitation for Watson

Tom Watson will return to the scene of the most memorable of his eight major championships. He has received a special exemption from qualifying for the 2010 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach, Jun. 17-20.

The 60-year-old Watson, winner of the 1982 U.S. Open at Pebble, where he chipped in on No. 17 to edge Jack Nicklaus, will become the only player to compete in all five U.S. Opens held at the fabled course on the Monterrey Peninsula. Pebble also hosted the event in 1972, 1992, and 2000.

It will be the fifth time in the last 17 years that Watson has received a special exemption to play in the Open. He has taken advantage, finishing in the top 30 each time he received an exemption.

On Sunday, Watson finished tied for 18th at the Masters.
