Lance’s libations
Before heading to Iowa for Tuesday’s presidential candidates’ forum on cancer, and even before appearing on “Meet the Press” on Sunday, six-time Tour de France champion and cancer survivor Lance Armstrong was spotted on Friday night sipping pomegranate margaritas at Rosa Mexicano downtown.
Armstrong didn’t need any liquid courage to give co-host Chris Matthews a hard time at Tuesday’s forum. As he was trying to get in a word edgewise to Hillary Clinton over Matthews, he quipped to the famously blustery talking head, “Thanks for finally letting me ask a question. At least I had cancer.”
Armstrong also expressed disappointment at the turnout for the event from Republicans. Onlysecond-tier candidates Mike Huckabee and Sam Brownback participated, while cancer survivors Rudy Giuliani and John McCain both opted out.
“It’s a disappointment that two cancer survivors on the Republican side aren’t coming,” Armstrong said. “I understand they have other commitments.”
In addition to Clinton, Democrats Dennis Kucinich, Bill Richardson and John Edwards participated.
