The Redskins drafted two receivers in the second round, hoping they would boost their passing attack. They still might. But it looks like it’ll take a while after yet another setback Monday — Malcolm Kelly underwent arthroscopic surgery and will miss at least two weeks.
Kelly did not play in Sunday’s 30-16 win over Indianapolis because of left knee soreness, after missing time the previous two weeks with a hamstring injury. Kelly was operated on by Dr. James Andrews in Pensacola, Fla.

“It has been kind of stiff,” Redskins coach Jim Zorn said of the knee. “We just thought we’d do things as soon as we can if there is a problem.”
Meanwhile, fellow second-round wideout Devin Thomas will miss another week because of his pulled hamstring, according to Zorn. Thomas hurt his hamstring July 24th while running for a deep pass. He was originally expected to miss 10 to 14 days.
“He was just getting to the stage where he could start running last week,” Zorn said. “He needs to have another week [off from practice].”
Though the Redskins’ passing game clicked in the preseason opener, the Redskins drafted the tall wideouts for a reason: they needed help at this spot. Kelly was having a strong camp before he hurt his hamstring on July 25th.
Considering receiver is a hard position to make an immediate impact, the fact that both rookies are missing substantial time in camp makes it less likely they’ll do much early in the season.
Kelly tore an ACL in junior high school and had arthroscopic knee surgery to repair a torn meniscus after his sophomore season at Oklahoma.
Redskins notes
» The Redskins released safety Stuart Schweigert yesterday. The ex-Oakland starter was signed this past spring, but was limited to free safety where the Redskins have LaRon Landry and some promising youngsters. Also, corner Shawn Springs can play there in a pinch.
» Washington also released linebacker Danny Verdun-Wheeler and signed safety Patrick Ghee and fullback/tight end Pete Schmitt.
