That was then, this is now
Sure, now Fred Thompson’s in the running for the 2008 Republican nomination for president of the United States. But lest we forget, it wasn’t always this way.
Just last November, Thompson joined saloon owner Carol Joynt for the Q&A Café at her Nathans Restaurant in Georgetown.
Joynt: Well, you have never run for president.
Thompson: No, I never did.
Joynt: But would you consider it?
Thompson: No.
That’s about as unequivocal as it gets in modern-day politics. But in case you still weren’t convinced of Thompson’s anti-candidate status less than a year ago, the conversation continued:
Joynt: But if they wanted you on a ticket, would you want to jump back in?
Thompson: I don’t think I would ever want to jump back in.
He even ruled out running for governor of his home state, Tennessee. Nevertheless, Thompson will go back on his word today, as he makes his much-delayed announcement for president.
