Ssejjemba makes United roster charge

With the Major League Soccer roster deadline days away, Robert Ssejjemba made one heck of a guest appearance for D.C. United. But it’s no guarantee he’ll be a late addition for the postseason.

Ssejjemba had a hat trick in United’s 4-1 reserve match win over Real Salt Lake on Sunday. One goal came via penalty kick and another was a simple one-touch finish on an empty net.

“He did well, but we’re looking at all our options now,” said United technical director Dave Kasper, who watched the match. The roster deadline is Friday. “He held the ball well. He was composed and got into some good scoring positions.”

Ssejjemba, a 26-year-old forward from Uganda, recently led the Richmond Kickers to the 2006 USL Second Division title with a league-leading 17 goals that earned him the league’s most valuable player award.

“We could probably use another forward,” said Kasper, “but we have a pretty deep roster.”
