Arizona State wrestler Anthony Robles knows what he wants to become once he leaves college: a motivational speaker.
Safe to say he’s qualified. Robles, born without a right leg, became a national champion by winning the 125-pound weight class at the NCAA wrestling tournament Saturday night.
Robles compensated for having only one leg by becoming much stronger than his opponents in his upper body. Technical aspects aside, his story is a motivational one.
“I just want to be that person who can turn around and help other people achieve what they want in life and reach their goals,” Robles told reporters.
He said he didn’t start wrestling at age 14 just for the attention. But he likes what the attention has done.
“It inspires me when I get kids, even adults, who write me on Facebook or send me letters saying that I’ve inspired them and they look up to me and they’re motivated to do things that other people wouldn’t have thought possible,” he said.
