Arundel falls in tournament

The Arundel baseball team rolled into its four-team holiday tournament on Sunday with an 8-0 record and had allowed just one run in its last three games. But some shoddy defense and missed opportunities at the plate left the Wildcats with their first two losses of the season.

Arundel fell, 11-5, in a semifinal loss to James M. Bennett, and 8-4, to Shenendehowa (N.Y.) in the consolation game.

Archbishop Curley (11-8) won the tournament title with a 12-2 victory against James M. Bennett (7-3). Curley notched a come-from-behind 10-9 win over Shenedehowa (3-1) in the semifinals.

“We didn?t play very well,” Arundel coach Bernie Walter said. “We didn?t play well defensively. It was a long day for us.”

Walter has been the head coach at Arundel for more than 30 years, and the team annually has one of the best programs in the area.
