Vasquez, Terrapins torched by Blue Devils in worst loss in 46 years

Who is Greivis Vasquez?

That was the response from a Duke student when an ESPN reporter presented him with Vasquez’s comments in Friday’s Examiner, where he called Cameron Indoor Stadium “my house.”

But Duke’s historic venue still very much belonged to the second-ranked Blue Devils throughout an 85-44 win over Maryland on Saturday that was the Terrapins’ worst loss in 46 years.

“I can think of maybe something better to say than ‘That’s my house’ before you come into Cameron to play,” Williams told reporters after his team dropped to 13-6 overall and 2-3 in Atlantic Coast Conference play.

Vasquez was asked in the Terrapins’ locker room after a victory over Virginia on Tuesday about his team’s trip to Durham, N.C.

His response: “I can’t wait. That’s my house. I love going in there. It’s going to be fun.”

Williams defended the junior guard after Duke (18-1, 5-0) embarrassed the Terrapins.

“He’s an emotional player,” Williams said. “It wasn’t a set-up interview, it was after the Virginia game and we were pretty happy we won and I think they just caught him at the right time when he said that, which happens.”

Williams’ advice for Vasquez, who scored four points on 2-of-10 shooting after averaging 19 points in his previous two trips to Durham, was to have a short memory.

“We need him to play really well and he’s been a good player for us over his first two years and we need to step it up now,” Williams said. “It’s getting toward the middle of the ACC season, so that’s what we’ll be focused on with him. He knows he shouldn’t have said what he said and he’s learned. Don’t take anything away from Duke. I don’t think they needed Greivis’ comments to get ready to play today. They had a chance to be No. 1 if they beat us and I think that was the motivating factor.”

Vasquez, whose comments were highlighted during a segment on ESPN’s SportsCenter from Saturday night to Sunday morning, was taunted by Duke’s fans, who chanted “Where is Greivis?” throughout the game.

“If you don’t prepare yourself and come out here and play hard, they’re going to get you,” Vasquez, who averages a team-high 16.3 points per game, told reporters after the game. “And they got us.”
